Manipulative people who are preoccupied with issues
of control often cast less powerful and vulnerable
people into subservient/codependent roles in the drama
of life --- and expect the less powerful people to
play their assigned roles willingly, properly and well.
Any failure to play the assigned roles --- is likely to
bring punishment of the weak and vulnerable people at
the hands of the powerful manipulators.
Some vulnerable people are willing to play collusive
games of mutual self deception with the manipulative
people. Most authentic people who are true to themselves
and each other --- are unwilling to play collusive games
of mutual self deception with manipulative people --- and
may suffer the consequences of their failures to conform.
Some vulnerable people play their assigned roles of slaves
so well --- that they are richly rewarded by their
manipulative masters.
In many instances it is pairs of people who
relate to each other in the above way; e.g., within a
formal or informal marriage. In many businesses,
organizations, professions, and religious congregations it
may be groups of people who relate to their manipulative
leaders and to each other in the above way --- within
addictive/codependent communities where there is little
personal or communal integrity.
In all manipulative relationships it only mature
leaders who transcend coercive role-playing and
casting of people into roles --- who are likely to be able
to help people be liberated in healthy ways from their
collusive prisons, double-binds, and preoccupations
with issues of control. Such creative behavior does not
flow from any exclusive system of commandments,
prescriptions, proscriptions, taboos, or discipline.
