Neither excellence nor superiority is worthy of respect or support --- when they pertain to manipulative/coercive uses of logic, reason, or scriptures. Some people are compulsively preoccupied with scriptures, reasoning and logic --- used as tools in debates over issues of law, order and control. Such people are dangerous. Beware of their excellent skills --- when they are used in the coercive manipulation of people. Such technocratic behavior leads to the disintegration of people and communities. Some people are skilled in the use of objective tools which are manipulated to achieve their chosen goals --- and often such objective manipulative skills merit respect and support. Yet skillful use of people who are treated as tools --- is skillful use which merits no respect or support. Both personal and communal integrity are sacrificed when people are used as tools in the manipulative hands of depersonalized technocrats. Technocratic excellence is no virtue when it is an expression of people's efforts to prove that they are better than other people. Any prudent consideration of the above issues entails careful attention to the kinds of motivations which enliven the development and use of excellence in regards to manipulative skills. Among such motivations may those be related to: 1. Fear, anxiety, insecurity, alienation, greed, etc. 2. Self-centered: pride, preoccupations, and addictions. 3. Placing exclusively high value upon law, order, disciplines, logic, reasoning, systems, formalities and controls. 4. Immaturity in regards to intimacy and sexuality. 5. Preoccupations with institutionalized religion and institutionalized confessions, commandments, doctrines, laws, spirituality, procedures, prescriptions, proscriptions, and taboos. 6. Unbalanced consideration of the certainties of the past relative to the possibilities of the future. 7. Unbalanced ideals, values, principles, and goals. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
