Humane learning is possible only when the necessary
emotional prerequisites have been fulfilled. Fear
undermines and/or misdirects learning and the uses made of
learning. Learning which occurs in fearful contexts may
be guided by, and later be put to use by fear. Techniques
which are learned in fear, are likely to be put in the
service of fear, and used in inhumane ways to respond to
the powers which occasioned the fear. Students who learn
techniques in fearful contexts therein learn to deal with
people in terms of fearful manipulations via inhumane
techniques. They learn to combine objective and humane
manipulations as if there were no important differences
between them.
Fearful contexts misdirect the uses of technical
learning which occurs within such contexts. Fearful
contexts also undermine the ability of students to learn
technical material. Anxiety and alienation which are
associated with fearful contexts block dialogue which is
essential to learning. Fearful people cannot be fully
honest with themselves, and so even prudent self-dialogue
is undermined and learning is thereby undermined.
The anticipation of undesired events generates
debilitating fears only in the absence of a supportive
community which might through its contextual support give
meaning to all events. People fear the loss of meaning,
significance, context, love. Events are feared when they
signal the loss of meaning, significance, context, and
love. People fear events which they have been taught
signal the loss of personal meaning, significance,
context, and love. We are taught what events to fear:
Personal mistakes, failures, emotional self-revelations,
death, etc.
Students who have been taught to fear learning-
mistakes find it difficult to avoid learning-mistakes,
because the fear undermines learning. Contexts which
teach student to be fearful of academic failure, occasion
the failures which the contexts teach students to fear.
Learning is promoted by humane contexts which assure
students that their personal worth does not depend upon
academic success. A loving community provides the
emotional context for humane learning. A highly critical
community which threatens to reject academic failures---
provides the context for technocratic learning which is
likely to be put to inhumane uses.
