It is not clear why the choice must be limited to just two alternatives. No proof is offered to show that there are no additional alternatives, perhaps because proofs of such a nature are virtually impossible to present in an objectively convincing way. Why is it that little thought is given to the possibility that the nature of ultimate reality might be personal, without connotations of supernatural. Why is the realm of direct inter-personal relationships excluded from consideration? Is it obvious that ultimate reality must be other than that of direct personal experience? Why reject direct personal experience in favor of some highly abstract, theoretical technical formulation of the nature of ultimate reality? Are the reasons political? The people who tend to promote some limited aspect of reality as the ultimate nature of reality---are the people who stand most to gain by their specialty becoming the bridge from appearances to reality. They encourage people to believe that their world is a world of mere appearances, and that technical specialists can offer the bridge from the world of appearances to the world of true perception of the ultimate nature of reality. In this way technical specialists can play a role much like that of the toll collector at a bridge. Of course the owners of the bridge will seek to promote business. On what grounds is it suggested that nay one aspect of reality is ultimate? Might it not be that there are many complementary perspectives and none ultimate. Is there an ultimate perspective from which one can get an ultimate understanding of a given mountain range? Does any one perspective offer any more ultimate a view of a mountain range than the other perspectives? Why must there be just one ultimate perspective? Is it assumed that God has only one perspective, and that to be like God we must have Her perspective? His perspective? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
