Being personal cannot be an act, and be genuine. To be personal is to perceive all those who are not personal at heart, but who for pragmatic reasons want to appear to be personal by the use of clever techniques. To be personal is to see through such technocratic acts, and to love the person who in fear plays the chosen role. Such acts do not conceal the actor from the view of those who know how to be personal without pretense. To be personal is to be free of the need to conceal motives, desires, passions, emotions, affection, and other aspects of being personal. Those who merely act as if they were personal must conceal their impersonal motivations---in order to appear as if they were being personal. Their act includes the use of techniques to mislead, if not outright misrepresent. Those who are free to be personal have no aspect of their being which needs to be concealed. Social context contributes much to whether or not we feel free to be personal. Some societies discourage personal living, and encourage technocratic behavior--- including acting as if one were personal. Such technocratic behavior is rationalized in impersonal ways which are motivated by non-technical needs of the technocrats. People who are free to be personal see through those rationalizations to the core of the frightened technocrats who feel that they must use techniques to survive in a threatening technocratic world---which was created by frightened people using techniques. Only as social contexts are created in which people are free to be personal---do people relax and stop hiding behind technocratic masks and defenses. Such social contexts grow as people take the risk of being personal in selected situations where the fruits of the risks justify taking the risks. There are no sure techniques by which we may create contexts within which real persons can feel free to be personal beings. There are techniques by which the excesses of technocracy may be moderated, leaving real persons free to help create such contexts. The techniques are those by which due process procedures protect people's communication rights, including rights to communicate emotions and affection. Contexts within which such rights are defended offer the opportunity for real persons to create social contexts for creative humane growth. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
