Some things we cannot do for lack of adequate resources: energy, water, soil, air, creativity, intelligence, etc. Other things we cannot do for lack of time; our lives are finite, we must set priorities and do some things and not others. Some things we cannot do because we cannot agree to cooperate, we are not together on our priorities. Other things we do not do for lack of desire to do them. There are yet other desirable things which we believe we cannot do, and our belief makes it impossible for us to do them. Yet other things are so beyond imagination that we are not conscious of them as possibilities. Then there are the achievements which are blocked from conscious consideration because of taboos, collusions, and traditions. We may find it impossible to enjoy life and have pleasure because of various kinds of impossibilities, especially these latter kinds. We may find it impossible to live in a society characterized by personal and social integrity---because of these kinds of impossibilities. Is it impossible to distinguish between the various kinds of impossibilities? If so, what kind of impossibility is it? It is politically important to distinguish between different kinds of impossibilities. We should know before beginning whether or not we have adequate resources to supply every human being on earth with 5 percent more energy each year than the year before---for the indefinite future. Will our energy supply last? Can space-ship- earth handle the waste heat and keep its passengers cool enough to survive? Is the fear of a heat death a psychic illness on the part of technologically faint hearted? Is the failure to push ahead on an energy-expansion program a communist plot to paralyze capitalism? Is is because we cannot agree on whether to do it, or on how to do it? The problem of distinguishing between different kinds of impossibilities is politically a significant problem, and can not wisely be ignored. Are processes which are inconsistent with well proven laws of science really impossible, or might enough faith overcome the pattern which occurred in the past and upon which scientific laws are based?
