Our direct sensory impressions are at one or more levels. Our categories in terms of which we understand our interpretations are at various levels. Our responses to our sensations, perceptions, categories, and understandings are varied. Our relationships within and between us are quite varied. We can be in and act in many levels of reality. When we are unaware of the varieties of levels in which we are and act, we tend to become confused and get in each other's way in non-helpful manners. Some of us cope as individuals seeking to preserve ourselves as organisms. Some of us seek to maximize the pleasure of our organism. Some seek to maximize personal relationships involving ourself. Others seek to maximize personal relationships for others. Some of us seek to focus our lives around objects, goals, ideals, ideas, categories, quests, visions, etc. To be unaware of such variety is to be blind to what we are doing and what others are being and doing. In blindness we are likely to stumble into each other and hurt each other. It would be well for more of us see the whole pattern of what we are being and doing. Those who are so perceptive will do well to share perceptions in charitable ways---for the perceptions can be very threatening. Growth involves continually discovering new levels of reality, not necessarily each higher than the former; just different. To be concerned with which levels of reality are higher and which are lower---is to be trapped at the level of pernicious inter-personal comparisons in viscous efforts to achieve security at each other's expense. Such a concern does not promote growth, it kills people. It is helpful to become aware of the natural way in which we may grow through levels of reality; i.e., to become aware of which levels are accessible to each other when people who find themselves at each level. Such an awareness facilitates growth through motion from one level to another without attempting unusually difficult transitions between levels which are distant from each other. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
