When respected as gods these idols demand many sacrifices---as former idols have demanded burnt offerings. They often demand that pleasure be enslaved and made to serve them, to motivate "godly" behavior which will promote progress, growth, work, production. To be an effective motivater pleasure must not be permitted in the absence of behavior which is "godly". "Godly" behavior is behavior which promotes progress, growth, work, and production. Behavior which fails to motivate progress, growth, work, and production is thus "ungodly". Pleasure is thus regarded as "idolatrous", for it is in competition if it is regarded as good in itself---rather than as a means to good ends. The "ends" justify the "means". Progress, growth, work, production and their like justify pleasure. Pleasure does not justify progress, growth, work, or production. Progress, growth, work, and production do not exist to give us pleasure. Pleasure is a means to motivate us to serve progress, growth, work, and production as gods. People are not to be so arrogant as to pass judgment upon these gods and the sacrifices which they demand. People exist to serve these gods, regardless of what sacrifices they demand. The gods demand the sacrifice of: pleasure as an end in itself, curiosity and its satisfaction as good it itself, learning for the pleasure of learning, wonder for the joy of wondering, privacy in which to be and enjoy one's self, limited natural resources until totally exhausted, etc. The gods of progress, growth, work, production, and consumption demand that personal considerations be sacrificed to serve them; that personal considerations be justified in terms of how well they serve the gods. The gods are not personal in character, they are quantitative in character---having to do with measurable characteristics. These quantitative gods demand the depersonalization of humans in order that humans serve them efficiently and without question. The gods do not love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
