A disease is a condition which causes you to be at dis-ease, not at ease. Some diseases can be objectively traced to microorganisms which infect a diseased person---often because the person was initially not at ease and so the person's resistance to micro-organisms was lower than that for a person who is at ease. Thus a micro-organism disease may be a symptom of a pre-existing condition of dis-ease which may be occasioned by perverted personal relationships, social contexts, work conditions, cultural matrices, religious institutions, educational institutions, economic conditions, etc. A form of dis-ease is anxiety which may be passed from person to person as an infectious disease. A person who is overtly anxious is likely to occasion anxiety in associates. It is not so obvious that some persons may be carriers of anxiety while themselves not being overtly anxious---they may occasion tensions which generate anxiety in others even though they can handle those tensions within themselves. Their personal success in handling such tensions prevents anxiety from being manifested overtly---and intensifies the anxiety which their shared tensions occasion in others; for others tend to be anxious about their inability to copy the role model who successfully deals with the tensions without anxiety. Traditional science teachers are often carriers of anxiety, and many students at an intuitive level fear such carriers of anxiety and avoid them---as they would avoid a known carrier of typhoid. Such students recognize the danger in internalizing the tensions between objective/subjective, analytic/holistic, systematic/spontaneous and other dichotomous pairs of tendencies---without any resolving principles. They recognize that traditional scientists do not embody any resolving principles and cope with the tension in ways which generate perverse personal relationships. They seek to avoid the contraction of the anxiety dis-ease which they see traditional scientists as carrying---and so avoid traditional science teachers. To be effective educators such teachers need to recognize the nature of the disease which they carry, and seek to find a cure for that disease. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
