Excellence is equated with specialization, exclusivity, elitism. Rarely do people in our technocratic society receive institutional encouragement to wisely balance competing claims upon their time, energy, imagination, money, and other resources. Specialized interest groups compete in promoting each individual's progressive specialization toward excellence in some narrow way. Generalized interest groups are virtually never organized to promote holism on the part of citizens in our technocratic society. Any citizens who sought to form a generalized interest group would be regarded as traitors to the virtues of our technocratic society. The formation of generalized interest groups is virtually unthinkable---and the few who dare to think of the possibility will most likely fear to let their thoughts lead them to public action. Our specialized groups tend to regard their specialty as the means to fulfillment, redemption, salvation, success, happiness, growth, etc. They tend to view life as a battle, contest, or war---between conflicting claims regarding the best technique to be followed---rather than to view life as an art of weaving together the strands of a balanced life, a life in which diverse individuals receive their fulfillment through the integration of diverse ways of perceiving, comparing, understanding, communicating, deciding, cooperating, and acting. Our tendency towards specialization promotes a feedback loop which accentuates our tendency towards specialization--- until we become so specialized that we cannot communicate with each other---and our geographic assemblages of people cease to be communities. Specialization undermines communal integrity, and thereby undermines personal integrity. Our technocratic society can transcend it's absurdities only as we as individuals come to recognize the society's absurdities, and band together for private mutual support and encouragement through which we can together transcend the collusions which enslave us. We as individuals must work together to transcend our perverse trend towards the increasing specialization which makes us more and more vulnerable to the manipulative techniques of those who are insensitive to us as whole beings.
