Physical pointing calls attention to an object; it focuses the attention of the pointer and of any observer of the pointer upon the object of the pointing. The pointing communication presumes that the observer is able to directly experience that to which the pointer is calling attention. Physical pointing in the presence of a blind person will be ineffective, unless the blind person physically follows the pointing through touch to locate the object to which the pointer seeks to call attention. In such a situation th blind person "sees" through touch and encounters the reality which is the focus of the pointing. Verbal descriptions of physical objects are at a significantly higher level of sophistication as a mode of communication---than is physical pointing in the presence of the focal object. Verbal descriptions offered in the absence of an object may be used to point to the object--- the description needing to be only good enough to uniquely identify which object the describer has in mind, one which the listener has previously experienced or may soon have occasion to directly experience. The description is not mistaken for the object to which it points---any more than the pointing finger is mistaken for the object to which it points---the focus is upon a reality which is independent of the pointing. The purpose of the pointing is to occasion a direct experience of the independent reality--- not to replace the reality with a substitute representation. The pointing is not intended to take the place of direct experience of the reality pointed to. These basic features of primitive communication are often forgotten in sophisticated intellectual communications. Often the communications are taken to be equivalent to the realities to which they point---to such an extent that the participants cease to have independent experiences of independent realities---their lives become smothered in formal representations which are taken to be equivalent to independent realities; yet the representations are reflexive interdependent communicative inventions of people slowly losing touch with reality as they invent their own independent representations of what is really real.
