Without desires there is no fulfillment and no meaning in life. Without desires life is dull, boring, frustrating, tedious, and prone to violence as a means to excitement. The fulfillment of non-existent desires occasions no satisfaction. Only the fulfillment of authentic desires occasions real satisfaction and meaning. Authentic desires originate within each of us; they can not be required of us, or artificially interjected. Authentic desires may be elicited, educed, drawn out; but not imposed. Satisfaction and meaning in life are occasioned by the development and fulfillment of our genuine desires, not by our conformity to others' prescriptions of what is desirable. Prescriptions of what is desirable may occasion the repression of authentic desires, and engender futile attempts to replace authentic desires with approved desires. Pretending to have a desire is different than having the same desire. Actions which are expressive of required desires --- are quite different than actions motivated by genuine desires which naturally occasion those actions. Legalists may successfully require actions; they can not successfully require desires. Legalists may thus successfully require people to lack integrity --- by requiring actions which are not expressive of genuine desires. People who lack integrity tend not to act wisely; thus, legalists who require in authentic desires undermines wisdom. Wisdom pertains to the loving expression of authentic desires, not to technical sophistication in accomplishing approved goals. Wisdom pertains to fulfilling our transcendent purpose in life, not to the accomplishment of our goals. Love prompts desires for union, not the desire to control others. The desire to control others blocks communication; love's essence is to remove blockages to communication and thus fulfill the desire for union. Satisfaction and meaning are occasioned by the fulfillment of the desire for unions, not by union itself. Union in the absence of desire for union is meaningless union which does not occasion satisfaction. Since legalists can not successfully require desires, they can not successfully provide means for assuring satisfaction which is occasioned by the fulfillment of authentic desires.
