How self feels about self's thinking --- plays an important role in self's intellectual involvements as prompted by self's id. (In the language of transactional analysis substitute "parent" for super "ego" and substitute "child" for "id"). At a second level, the thoughts self has about the feelings self has about self's thinking --- will play a role in determining the outcome of the interaction between intellect and affect. Similarly the feelings self has about the thoughts about feelings --- play an important role. Each person embodies a continual dialogue about self's emotional and intellectual aspects. If the emotional and intellectual aspects are not in harmony, the self lacks integrity: (1) Perhaps with intellect dominating affect and the resultant eventual outbursts of violence, (2) Perhaps with affect under-mining intellect with the resultant foolish/thoughtless behavior, (3) Perhaps with a constant battle between intellect and affect with the resultant inconsistencies in personal behavior which overtly make manifest the internal lack of integrity. The dialogue between intellect and affect is not a purely verbal dialogue. It cannot all be written down or spoken aloud. The dialogue is difficult to articulate because intellect does not fully understand the language of affect; nor does affect fully understand the language of intellect. To the extent that there is an internalized dichotomy, there is a lack of integrity. The resolution of the dichotomy cannot be accomplished by either purely intellectual or purely affective efforts. It can occur only in social settings dedicated to the process of reconciliation --- in contrast to being dedicated to promoting any kind of conformity via threats of alienation. Reconciliation will be promoted by communications which make manifest a respect for both the thoughts and feelings of unique individuals---regardless of their context---so as to promote the growth of a dedication to openness. Neither emotional nor intellectual put-downs will be helpful. To develop personal integrity individuals must be free to consider without shame or guilt their emotional/intellectual lives within a supportive community dedicated to promoting and facilitating personal integrity.
