Defenders of a collusion will thus tend to be in communication only with participants in the collusion; avoiding dialogue with those outside the collusion. When outsiders challenge the point of view of participants in the collusion, those services participants are likely to hold revival meetings, rededication services, and write papers reaffirming the traditional values and perspective of the collusion. Such rituals are not without merit, for they usually involve positive affirmations of real values. Such values are not, however, sufficient grounds for the unquestioned acceptance of all implications present in the affirmations. Participants in a collusion cannot (through dialogue among themselves) discover the nature of their collusion. Excellence in scholarship, careful reasoning, attention to detail, accuracy of numerical measurements/computations, volumes of readings, etc. fail to uncover the nature of the collusion --- so long as participants communicate only with other participants within their collusion. When anybody undertakes a vigorous defense of their traditional values and perspectives, it may be helpful to examine the extent of dialogue between that person and the critics who occasioned the defended. Is there real dialogue? Is there a real effort to achieve mutual awareness and mutual understanding? Do those who disagree have any personal concern for each other's welfare? Do they trust each other in spite of their basic differences in values, perspectives, and interests? If the answers to these questions tend towards the negative side---there is ground for suspecting that a collusion is being defended, rather than being transcended. The way out of a collusion is through intimate dialogue, not debate. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
