In a complementary perspective dependency is regarded as a sign of weakness, failure, and frustration. Such associations tend to be made most frequently by technically oriented people rather than by non-technically oriented people. Interdependence and interrelationship are the laws of life. In the absence of interdependence and inter- relationships---life ceases. To ignore these essentials to life in an effort to achieve total independence is self destructive. This is not to say that all forms of dependency are mutually fulfilling and satisfying. There are destructive forms of dependency. There are also forms of dependency which are essential to human fulfillment. There are tragic consequences occasioned by failures to distinguish between types of dependency. People who in a mature way love each other are mutually dependent upon each other in many ways. Love bonds people together in a way which puts an end to their exclusive independence and frees them to enjoy new kinds of fulfillment and satisfaction of personal desires. Together they can transcend their individual weaknesses and failures, and so overcome many of their frustrations. They can transcend the limitations of the technocratic way. Through interdependence and intimate interrelationships they enhance life in mutually fulfilling and satisfying ways. Such dependency is not to be feared or avoided. The kinds of dependency which are debilitating do not involve mutuality with respect to vulnerability, risk, cost, trust, giving, receiving, and power. It is lack of mutuality where mutuality is essential that causes problems, not dependency itself. Real people need each other and do not seek to reduce their need for each other. Love motivates them to direct power so that there may be justice for all within the bounds of human finitude. Love does not motivate them to seek their fulfillment or security through independence. Love promotes a mature dependency within which people can fully become themselves in mutually satisfying ways. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
