We can not consider sexuality free of bias. Thus it is important to perceive the particular bias of each person's understanding of sexuality. Exclusive objectivity is biased against subjective and reflexive insights and perceptions. Exclusively theoretical approaches are biased against existential data and knowledge gained through intimate relationships. Exclusively legalistic ways of dealing with sexuality are biased against respect for individual differences. Exclusively subjective ways of living are biased against the perception of generally recognized patterns of cause and effect. The value of any consideration of human sexuality depends upon a recognition of the bias inherent in that consideration. If the bias is not recognized, the value of the fruits of the consideration is greatly reduced. Legalists rarely are interested in the reports of peoples' experiences in intimate sexual relationships. Such data is perceived by them to be irrelevant to their theories about human sexuality. They tend to have an exclusive concern for maintaining their theories, rather than for testing their theories against existential data. This is true of both secular and religious legalists--- they differ primarily in the nature of their theories of human sexuality and what constitutes proper sexual behavior. Advocates of "free sex" often fail to respect observed patterns of consequences of entering into various types of intimate relationships. It is often difficult to distinguish between chosen consequences which flow from social conventions and traditions on the one hand, and inevitable consequences which human decisions and actions can not avoid. Because all researchers dealing with human sexuality are participants in human sexuality unbiased research into human sexuality is impossible. Because all sexual relationships occur within a social context it is impossible to fully separate out which consequences of sexual relationships flow from the nature of the society, which flow from "natural laws", and which are chosen by the participants. Ambiguity seems to be an essential ingredient in human sexual relationships. Attempts to eliminate ambiguity tend to eliminate healthy sexual relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
