Fears of change and/or growth often paralyze needed change and/or growth --- by generating dysfunctional motivations and behavior patterns. There is a sense in which such fears are fears of the unknown and the unfamiliar. They may be rooted in fears of making mistakes while dealing with new situations --- because in the past such mistakes have lead to punishments, rejection and and alienation. Recognizing the ways in which such motivations/fears have arisen and functioned --- can suggest ways in which to mitigate them. 2. Dysfunctional motivations may arise due to ignorance, misinformation, confusion, prejudice, faulty logic/reason, and/or misleading traditions. Fear may, or may not, play a major role in conjunction with such motivations. Here again, recognizing the ways in which such motivations/fears have arisen and functioned --- can suggest ways in which to mitigate both them and the associated thoughts, feelings, decisions and behaviors. 3. Incoherent and misleading sets of ideals, values, principles, desires --- can engender dysfunctional behaviors because of unresolved conflicts. Conflicts between and/or within people are often rooted in conflicts between and/or among whatever leads, guides and/or motivates the people. Dysfunctional behavior often flows from incoherent sets of ideals, values, principles and/or desires --- due to the conflicts between/among them. Dysfunctional conflicts within and between people can better be resolved in creative (not conformal) ways when the people involved have come to recognize the conflicts between the incoherent sets of ideals, values, principles and/or desires which guide/lead them. 4. Communicable dis-eases, collusions, traditions, group-dynamics, mob-psychology, and thoughtless loyalties often play roles in engendering dysfunctional motivations, thoughts, approaches, attitudes, decisions and actions. In these instances dysfunctionality is rooted in dysfunctional relationships which debilitate peoples. We cannot well mitigate such occasions of dysfunctionality when we are driven by ignorance, misinformation, confusion and/or prejudice --- regarding what has and is happening which leads to personal and communal disintegration. Rarely does skill and diligence in placing blame/shame help anybody in any way. 5. Dysfunctional motivations are often rooted in patterns of blame, shame, regrets, resentments, revenge, punishments, coercion, violence, alienations, judgments, excommunications --- which engender each other in confusing ways. It is usually not easy to sort out when such factors are debilitating --- from when they play some positive roles. Which is which is often dependent upon the background, the foreground, the framing --- and so the point of view of the viewer. 6. Dysfunctional motivations often flow from dysfunctional personal relationships. They relationships are often characterized by: ALIENATION MISUNDERSTANDING CONFUSION COERCION CONTROL ISSUES MISLEADING-EXPECTATIONS JUDGEMENTALISM LEGALISM SHAME BLAME GUILT ADDICTIONS DEPENDENCY EXCLUSIVITY IMBALANCE EXTREMISM DICHOTOMIES DISTRUST PERFECTIONISM Dyfunctional motivations cannot helpfully be traced to any one or a limited number of sources. Dysfunctional motivations are rooted in complex webs of inter-connecting factors. It is futile, but common, to try to find THE SOURCE, and to lay shame, blame and responsibility at the feet of THE SOURCE. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
