Religious leaders who are preoccupied with issue of
control often imprison themselves and others in systems
of laws, prescriptions, proscriptions, commandments,
taboos, judgementalism, etc. Within their systems there
is often confusion about whether or not their followers
are to be held accountable for non-conformity because of:
a. What they covet, desire, hope for, etc?
b. What they envision, fantasize, image, etc?
c. What rules, commandments, etc. are ignored?
d. What rules, commandments, etc. are violated?
e. What rules, commandments, etc. are rejected?
f. What outcomes of their actions are wrong?
g. What intentions of theirs were wrong?
h. Non-conformal beliefs or perceptions?
i. Non-conformal descriptions and relationships?
j. Their alienation from those who reject them?
k. Their alienation from those whom they reject?
l. Their use of coercion, violence & alienation?
m. Their abuse of people's guilt and shame?
n. Their ways of making people insecure/vulnerable?
o. Their preoccupation with their own salvation?
p. Their preoccupation with others' salvations?
q. Their concerns with perfection/imperfection?
r. Their indifference to justice, humility & mercy?
s. Their tendency to excel in self-righteousness?
t. How they treat neighbors who seem to be "less"?
u. They they honor neighbors who seem to be "more"?
In the interests of simplicity people often try to
focus upon just one or two considerations --- to the
exclusion of other complementary considerations. The
simplicity which they apparently achieve turns out to be
only apparent simplicity, not real. It is usually a
tragic simplicity which leads to alienation and
disintegration of persons and communities. Dealing
openly and honestly with real life entails giving due
consideration to numerous factors, not just a very few.
Some people want some way to unequivocally decide
the rank ordering or in/out status of the competitors in
the competition for superiority. That is not a simple
thing to do when there are numerous factors which merit
consideration. Some people "on principle" insist on a
simple rule for deciding rank ordering or in/out status;
and insist that only one or a very few factors merit
consideration. They are prone to lead people into
tragic simplicity.
