Every question is formulated within the context of some set of assumptions. If the assumptive context of a question is misleading all straightforward answers to the question will accept the assumptive context and be misleading to the extent that the assumptive context is misleading. There can be no "correct answers" to questions which are asked within misleading assumptive contexts. The most helpful response to questions asked within misleading assumptive contexts is usually to call into question, in an integrative way, the misleading assumptions which form the context for the questions. This may threaten a collusion which is protecting games of mutual self deception regarding the misleading assumptive context. Participants in the collusion may respond violently to such a threat, and assert their right to the "correct" answer to their "reasonable" question. Often people assert that their particular dogma, doctrine, ritual, knowledge, fact, procedure, priority, etc. is correct. By what criteria? That it promotes unity in the community? That it promotes both personal and communal integrity? That it maintains the power base of its promoters? Sustains a collusion? The answers to such questions may be "correct" only within some assumptive context, and are misleading to the extent that the assumptive context which is accepted is itself misleading. Genuine leaders who have integrity do not thoughtlessly accept misleading assumptive contexts. They promote both personal and communal integrity by responding to questions in ways which transcend the misleading assumptive contexts within which the questions were framed---yet avoiding the natural tendency to elicit defensive responses from those people whose assumptions are threatened. Real leaders help people to escape from the collusions within which they have imprisoned themselves and others. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
