If taboos are evil, then there should be a taboo
against taboos; i.e., a taboo against rejecting persons
who violate the taboo. The essence of a taboo is a threat
to reject the persons who violate the taboo. The essence
of evil is the personal rejection of persons who do not
conform. Evil is thus the essence of the enforcement of
taboos. Should there be a requirement that people who
reject others for the failure to conform, should
themselves be rejected for being evil? That would be
absurd, and in addition it is hardly necessary. Such
people eject themselves from their community by their own
rejection of others. There is no point in trying to
punish them by excluding them from our integrative
community. Rejection is ejection from community. They
eject themselves from our integrative community.
We need to break the pattern of people being ejected
from community, by themselves, or by others. To try to do
so by ejecting people from community because they eject
people from community would be absurd. We needed a way of
bringing people into the integrative community, the Law of
Love.
The Law of Love is an affirmation of the
transcendence of taboos. It is not a law which requires
conformity of any kind. It implies no threat, reward or
punishment. The Law of Love is an affirmation of the
importance of balanced personal and communal integrity
through acceptance which transcends conditions and
conventions. Taboos and collusions revolve around threats
seeking to promote convergent conformal behavior in the
absence of open and honest dialogue about experiences,
perceptions, desires, opinions, values, ideals, etc. The
Law of Love is an affirmation of the ultimate importance
of making it safe to be vulnerable in open and honest
dialogue about personal experiences, perceptions, desires,
opinions, values, ideals, etc.
The presence of a threat usually elicits a counter-
threat. The Law of Love points the way to break out of
the vicious feed-back loop of threat and counter-threat,
and points the way to meaningful security in spite of the
inevitable presence of vulnerability. Love provides a way
to find meaning and intimacy within the inevitable context
of vulnerability and the possibility of threats and
counter-threats. Technology does not.
