In the latter societies judgments are not centered upon isolated individual actions and possessions, but upon the quality of relationships which involve two or more members of the society. Judgments pertain to the quality of the relationships. It makes a significant difference whether a society focuses upon individuals as isolated entities when making judgment, or upon the relationships within which cooperating members of the society participate. To pass judgment upon a relationship leads to different kinds of responses than to pass judgment upon an isolated individual. People who feel that their relationship is inadequate and wish to improve the relationship are in a natural position to cooperate upon improving the quality of the relationship. The effort to cooperate itself tends to improve the relationship. A person who has been judged inadequate and rejected is isolated and not in a natural position by self effort to improve self and become acceptable to people prone to make negative judgments of individuals who are in competition with judges for the limited attention which is available. Focusing upon individuals in passing judgments tends to promote alienation. Focusing upon relationships in passing judgments tends to promote cooperation. Individuals both participate in and are created by relationships. Apart from human relationships humans are not human. To judge humans apart from their relationships does not promote personal and communal integrity. To make judgments about the quality of human relationships does promote personal and communal integrity. The former judgment is not an act of love, the latter may be. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
