As we remember the past we may experience guilt because we regret our mistakes and resent the punishments and rejections which they have occasioned. We may slip out of the eternal now because we have lost hope for the future in fear that our worst expectations and anticipations will be fulfilled in place of our wishful predictions of successful manipulations to achieve salvation and acceptance. We alienate each other by our expectations laid upon each other because of the pain occasioned by past disappointments due to hopes shattered by the course of events. We are afraid to grow old because we do not know how to enjoy our relationships in the eternal now of I-Thou intimacy and vulnerability. We regret the past and fear the future yet can not live vibrantly in the eternal now. We can't find our place in time and are lost somewhere between the past and the future, not knowing or appreciating the present or each other's presence. We can't be in the present because we are out of touch with being because we do not know how to be ourselves; we have been too busy fulfilling coercive expectations. We measure time but do not know the eternal now in any intimate way, so time has no meaning or significance. In keeping with our scientific age we respect scientists for their manipulative successes and seek instrumental technologies to resolve our problems in dealing with our temporal and competency finitude. We seek significance and meaning in technical accomplishment rather than in personally authentic human relationships. We develop technologies to facilitate "communication" while specializing our attention in ways which inhibit authentic human sharing of human experiences and perceptions. Somewhere in time we need to set aside the time to reflect upon our way of using our time without getting to know each other in the eternal now of the presence of those nearest and dearest to us.
