Professors may recognize that serious emotional trauma's like deaths in the family and problems in inter-personal relationships with parents, friends and lovers may play a role through distraction. Similarly with financial and cultural shock for students outside their native country. Rarely do professors recognize and give due consideration to the deliberative effect upon a student associated with the emotions elicited by cognitive dissonance between the subject matter as taught by the professor and the student's pre-existing cognitive perspectives. The subject matter as taught by the professor may constitute a serious threat to the personal integrity of the student. The student may have a very high intellectual ability for some subject matter, yet be unable to learn it because it is taught in a way which forces the student to compromise personal integrity to learn the material or maintain personal integrity at the price of not learning the material. If professors are not committed to promoting student's personal and communal integrity they will usually not care much about the way in which their teaching threatens students' personal integrity. Tough luck! Such an attitude is evil in the sense that it promotes alienation and the disintegration of both personal and communal integrity; robbing the community of the creative abilities of students who might have been helped to integrate the subject matter into their lives in a coherent way by helping them resolve the cognitive conflicts which blocked their learning, conflicts between ideals and principles not clearly seen in the light of transcendent human perspectives. Understanding learning difficulties can be a key to improving the quality of human education and human lives.
