The person trapped by a sense of responsibility to make uncharitable judgments needs to find more integrative ideals which do not place such a sense of responsibility upon people who are trying to avoid evil and be good. These efforts to develop integrative mature role models entail both cognitive and affective aspects, both individual and communal aspects. To be integrative they must bring together tendencies to go to polar extremes. Specialists can not play such an integrative role and tend instead to make uncharitable judgments based upon highly specialized criteria. Highly qualified specialists should not be respected when they make uncharitable judgments. Uncharitable judgments are never worthy of respect, no matter how respectable and powerful are the people who make them. It is difficult, however, to reject uncharitable judgments without at the same time uncharitably passing rejective judgment upon the uncharitable judge. Rejective judgments are always uncharitable. They are never integrative. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
