The grounds for the expectation may have been self declarations, or it may have in some sense been based upon some sense of responsibility; i.e., there may have been social expectations put upon the embarrassed person. Usually it is an individual person who is embarrassed, but not always. Sometimes it may appear that it is an individual person who is embarrassed, yet that individual embarrassment may at a more profound level the embarrassment of an individual may reveal that the society does not have a competency which was expected. The expected competency may not be an individual competency, but a corporate competency. A culture or society may presume to have a competency which it in fact does not and may not be able to have. Such a presupposition may lead to corporate embarrassment. Corporate embarrassment is complicated by the fact that it is revealed in individual embarrassment as individuals discover that they do not have the power to maintain the corporate pretense of a competency claimed in a collusive game of mutual self deception. The individual has the responsibility to maintain that game of mutual self deception, to be competent to play the game. An individual may be embarrassed at being exposed as lacking the competency to play the game of mutual self deception in a convincing way. The embarrassment is thus both individual and corporate, but the real embarrassment is corporate because the more important lack of competency is the corporate inability to carry the game of mutual self deception to a conclusion while maintaining the integrity, the unity, of the community. A community can not successfully pretend to have unity, which is the essence of being a community, while continuing to play the game of mutual self deception. A community may regard one of its members as the weakest link in the chain of defense against the disintegration of its pretentious apparent unity. A community may put upon a member the responsibility to maintain the deception, and deliberately embarrass any member who fails to fulfill the responsibility to defend the collusion.
