They are not skilled in articulating them, comparing them, and making informed judgments regarding them. Willy nilly they deal with values, ideals and priorities; but without skill, and with little conscious thought regarding what they are doing or why. We tend to focus our attention upon that which is most important to us, and that upon which we focus most of our attention becomes most important to us. Research scientists focus most of their attention upon objects as objects. It is natural that research scientists regard objects as the most important realities in their lives. Because of their narrowly focused dedication to the study of objects as objects it is natural that research scientists arrive at the practice of considering objects as the only important reality type. It is hard to believe that you are paying no attention to realities which are around you, that you literally can not see real things which are in your presence. That would be to admit that you are blind. Scientists who pay no attention to non-objective realities are thus prone to deny that non-objective realities to which they have chosen to pay no attention are still real in spite of their lack of attention from scientists. The natural consequence of scientists' dedication to the study of just objective realities is to deny the reality of non- objective realities; and to pay even less attention to that which has been defined to not exist. It would be foolish to pay attention to that which does not exist. Those people who do pay attention to that which does not exist are thus regarded as fools, and excluded from the fellowship of intelligent scientists. There is less embarrassment that way. Specialists who become exclusive in the focus of their attention are prone to come to regard realities outside their range of specialization as unimportant and perhaps unreal. Thus they become unable to relate their specialty to other areas of human endeavor and so become alienated from all that might give their specialty significant meaning. They become irrelevant and insignificant to the integrity of their community, except perhaps as agents of disintegration. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
