     The  fruits  of  successful scientific  research  are
conclusions which are reliable and useful because they are
as free as is humanly possible of human biases.   Reliable
conclusions are not determined by the exercise of superior
coercive  power,   but by the results  of  experimentation
designed  in  accord  with previously  verified  theories.
Authority resides in the behavior of objects which are not
controlled  by  humans.    By  designing  and   performing
experiments scientists ask questions of the natural world.
Natural  processes  provide  the answers.    There  is  no
advantage  in  trying to make natural processes  be  other
than what they are naturally.  To be creatively successful
scientists  must find ways to eliminate or counter-balance
as many forms of bias as possible.

     Subtle   forms  of  human  bias  can  undermine   the
integrity of scientists' research efforts at each level of
formulating:  priorities, questions, experimental designs,
interpretations and reports.   It is not easy to transcend
human biases,  because human desires and expectations play
central roles in creative scientists'  professional lives.
What is discovered depends upon what might be  discovered,
upon what scientists want to discover,  upon what they are
ready  to  recognize  and deal with,  and upon  what  they
