Retaining the power to coerce another or to threaten another undermines the possibility of mutuality in personal relationships. Mutual coercion does not make for mutual personal relationships, reciprocity is not the essence of mutual relationships. Each participant in a mutual relationship respects the other. There is reciprocity of respect in mutual relationships. However not all reciprocal relationships are mutual personal relationships. Reciprocity of distrust, fear, resentment, threat, coercion, manipulation, deception, etc. do not characterize mutual personal relationships. In mutual personal relationships each participant desires to deepen and continue the relationship. There is mutuality in desire but the desires are complementary rather than identical or determined by the other. In mutual personal relationships there is interdependence without coercive dependence. There is freedom to be oneself without indifference towards the other's interests and desires. Participants in mutual relationships are well aware of each other without imposing upon or preying upon each other. As participants they understand each other as whole persons, not as objectively analyzed participants in I-It relationships. Participants in mutual relationships understand each other within the context of I-Thou presence within the eternal now, rather than as patterns in the analyzed past. The object of mutual relationship is not the objective analysis of each other as objects of detached curiosity. Mutual relationships are not scientific relationships and do not yield to scientific analysis by scientists who stand outside of mutual relationships to maintain their objectivity. Mutual relationships can not be described without bias by non- participants who are ignorant of the essence of such relationships. Descriptions by non-participants do not describe the essence of the reality of mutual relationships for non-participants are ignorant of that essence because they have not given themselves to freely knowing mutual relationships with personal and communal integrity. Communion is essential to mutual knowledge, awareness and understanding. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
