The rate of growth or decay may be such that at any one moment in history the participants perceive the growth or decay as unquestionably desirable. The growth or decay is judged in terms of the set of ideals and values which have operated to create the feedback loops which are controlling the growth or decay. Yet, no one may be aware of the way in which the thoughtless process is bound to go to undesirable extremes which may not be recognized until an extreme has been reached and passed. In the absence of thoughtful balance ideals and values are bound to operate through thoughtless feedback loops to produce oscillations between extreme which extremists regard as desirable or devilish depending upon where they stand. Extremists work to promote the opposite extreme, rather than work to promote feedback loops designed to promote balance and long-term stability. Feedback loops should be designed to promote balance and stability. Stability at an extreme is not balance. Stability need not be static, it can be dynamic. Stability does not mean the absence of change. Feedback loops are used in airplanes to achieve stable flight in a balanced way. Feedback loops can be designed to achieve social and personal growth with balance and integrity. Often feedback is negative in nature. The filtering of some aspect of a signal and preventing it from participating in the feedback loop may be the most important aspect of what is happening. Dictators who deny communication rights know this well and inhibit the free flow of ideas, facts, opinions, etc. In the same way informal collusions, taboos, traditions, and institutions may inhibit desirable feedback and so undermine the integrity of a community as to cause its disintegration. Thus we need to become aware of inhibitory feedback effects which cause the decay of the basis of unity in a community. It is our ideals which control our feedback loops. If they operate thoughtlessly and invisibly we are likely to experience great tragedies. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
