The states of consciousness---which we find and experience---depend upon what we seek. The compulsively objective scientist who seeks to demonstrate that there is no objective consciousness succeeds in his venture. The personable extrovert who seeks to become intimately involved with as many other personable humans in vulnerable relationships of mutual sharing of thoughts, intuitions, sensations, feelings, premonitions, visions, fantasies, fears, hopes, expectations, etc.--- also succeeds. Neither kind of success proves that the other kind is not real. Each kind of person finds that doors open to their desires---and the answer to their request is given to overflowing; they get more of what they sought than they may have bargained for. They may not enjoy what the receive, but their receive. Consciousness resides in relationships, not within elements. Consciousness is created within relationships and continues only so long as the relationships which create and maintain consciousness continue in respected ways. People committed to objective relationships as a matter of principle minimize the level of consciousness they have of their own relationships their relationships. They seek relationships characterized by the minimization of their personal involvement in and awareness of their relationships. Their relationships therefore do not involve the "discovery" of high levels of consciousness, and they come to doubt that consciousness is real. Elements are created by relationships, as much as relationships are created by elements. People who as a matter of principle seek to avoid deeply personal relationships---tend to become very impersonal people who seek to create very impersonal relationships, etc. Thus scientists who are compulsively objective in their search for objective understanding---tend not to be very personable in their dealings with their students and so their relationships with their students---tend to be impersonal and non-supportive. They tend to draw into their profession students who, like themselves, fear to become involved in deeply personal relationships characterized by high levels of consciousness and intimacy.
