It is more likely to reside in the extent to which instrumental values and ideals block the open and honest evaluation of alternative transcendent ideals, and the consequences of being committed to alternative ideals. In a technocratic society the process of training each new generation of technically competent young people---leads to greater and greater specialization, the development of narrower and more exclusive ideals, and the reduction of the levels of openness, honesty, mutuality, vulnerability and intimacy in human dialogue. Dialogue, especially when characterized by such features, tends not to be highly valued in a technocratic society. The ideals of the technocratic society inhibit the critical examination of the ideals of the technocratic society. Society members become trapped in a collusion which makes the criticism of the ideals of the society to be taboo. The graduate schools of the technocratic society play an essential role in defending the ideals of the technocratic society against criticism by people who perceive the tragic consequences of being committed to such ideals. Such perceptive people must not be permitted to infect the faculty and students of the graduate schools---with doubts about their ideals. Ways are found to deflect their presence and/or insights. To be effective the ways must not be obvious, and must not be open to criticism. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
