We can appreciate the difference between one situation and another situation. A prison is hard to appreciate as an inmate because life is so much the same day after day, except as inmates rebel and make some differences occur. A blinding snow storm is hard to appreciate because there are no contrasts to appreciate. Total darkness is hard to appreciate because you can see no differences within it. At the other extreme it is hard to appreciate situations which are so full of differences that there is no sense of security in the situations. When differences are excessive appreciation turns to panic and a search for similarities, and to effort to return to the familiar, the traditional; even if it involves limitations upon freedom to be different. Revolutionaries may or may not be appreciated, depending upon how their differences are perceived; as desirable contrasts or as threatening contrasts. A change can be appreciated by those who have become bored with situations which entail no differences. Change can be threatening to those who feel insecure because they are vulnerable in a context in which they do not feel safe to be vulnerable. To promote constructive change the people affected by the change must be able to anticipate the change as a welcomed difference within a secure context. The change must entail a welcomed contrast by people who feel secure enough to enjoy the contrast. To promote change one must know how to promote security in the context of change, so change can take place within the context of security. It is difficult to help participants in a collusion to feel secure in the face of cognitive dissonance relating to the possible transcendence of the collusion. The change involved in cracking the cosmic egg of the collusion is bound to be threatening to participants' sense of security which is based upon the collusion. Participants need to come to appreciate an alternative foundation for security before they can securely appreciate the differences between their collusion and the world outside their collusion.
