                      %POPULATION CONTROL INSTINCTS 850108

     Many  species  seem to have some  population  control
instincts.    Under  the pressure of  population  crowding
reproductive  behaviors  shift  to reduce  the  number  of
reproductions.    Humans have developed some ideals  which
repress  such  population control instincts  by  insisting
that  reproductive behaviors not be related to  population
crowding.    The result is increased  population  crowding
which leads to many perverse behaviors and violence due to
the frustrations,  stress,  conflicts,  etc.  of crowding.
Ideals  which lead to such perverse behaviors need  to  be
assessed   in  terms  of  their  consequences---and   more
appropriate ideals considered as proper alternatives.

     Part  of  the  problem is  that  rationally  oriented
people tend to look with  disdain upon instinctual wisdom.
Instinctive  behavior is suspected because it  calls  into
question  rational collusions and their pretensions.   The
compulsively  rational would prefer to fly in the face  of
instinctive wisdom rather than risk moving towards honesty
about  the limitations of their rational insights.   As  a
result they do foolish things which their collusions  keep
them  from seeing as foolish.   They remain true to  their
rationalistic ideals and oblivious of their limitations.
