Such acts take for granted the separation, confirm and perpetuate it. They do not seek reconciliation, integration or community. They are based upon the assumption of the existence of a superior I which is separate from other and properly qualified to try to get others to behave properly according to the ideals which distinguish and separate self and other. When each self regards self as superior to other by virtue of the ideals which distinguish self from other, then there is no basis for community-integrating self and other in ways which open the possibilities of learning from shared experiences which transcend the conflicting ideals. The idealistic theories can not be tested through shared experiences because the ideals block the sharing of experiences; the experiences of each being forbidden, taboo, collusively repressed to the other. That which defines each self as unique and distinguished, separates each self from other in ways which block reconciliation. Both self and other must acknowledge their interdependence within a universe which is a unity-verse of experiences which define the creatures of the universe. To deny such inter-dependence is to confirm it in frustration rather than in joy, in violence rather than in cooperation, in disintegration rather than with integrity. The inter-dependence is the reality of life. To deny it is deadly. The objectified self is a separated self concerned with the salvation of I as a super-ego---in need of techniques to achieve security without giving up the basis for separation and superiority. The objectified self defines It's self apart from I-Thou relationships of profound interdependence and integrity. So defined It can not logically lose It's self to enjoy the experience of community within a unity which transcends judgment, rejection, punishment, reward and maneuvers. To enjoy such joy requires the sacrifice of all bases for judgment, rejection, punishment, reward and maneuvers designed to make inferior others do what they should do. Such joy is a gift to those who sacrifice the ideals which demand and justify separation from interdependent others. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
