Whether or not an emotion is integrative is not determined by the nature of the emotion; rather, it is determined by the pattern of affective and intellectual responses of the community to occasions when members give expression to that emotion. If jealousy is rewarded with attention and respect---it may be the basis for integrative behavior of a sort, even though in the long run such efforts at community integration are certain to disintegrate. If expressions of desires for loving intimacy are met with embarrassment and moralizing---then sexual emotions may be the grounds for exclusion of members of the community from integrative circles---even though in the long run such circles are clearly dependent upon sexual emotions for true integrity. In the short run each community regards some emotions as integrative, and some as disintegrative emotions. Such communal self-regard may be unenlightened. Emotions which are integrative in the short term, may be disintegrative in the long term; and vice versa. At a profound level the integrity of a community depends upon how wisely it decides which emotions to regard as integrative and which to regard as disintegrative. That communal decision must be integrated with communal intellectual, rational, logical, and political processes. The integrity of a community depends upon integrating the many complementary ways of knowing and being known. The community that does not successfully integrate affective and intellectual ways of knowing will disintegrate. In particular, any community which rejects any important way of knowing as essentially disintegrative, will itself disintegrate for lack of the knowledge characteristic of that way of knowing. Rejection of knowledge is not an integrative act. Wisdom is not founded upon ignorance, but upon integration of contrasting ways of knowing. Objectivity and analysis are not the only reliable ways to the knowledge upon which wisdom can be founded. People who reject non-objective and non-analytic knowledge contribute to the disintegration of their community. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
