Neither can we give/share that which by taboo/collusion we are forbidden to own/enjoy, nor can we give/share that which by taboo/collusion we are required to own/enjoy in an exclusive possessive way. Giving, sharing, owning, and enjoying are not meaningful when they are exclusive and/or possessive; nor are they meaningful when they are required or forbidden by collusion or taboo. Lessons learned in childhood play an essential role in our ability to give/share meaningfully. Such lessons can not be easily learned when the proper time for them has already passed---for other contradictory lessons already learned are likely to stand guard and forbid the learning of how to give/share and own/enjoy in genuine freedom which is meaningfully inclusive and generous. To own is to claim as your own, to identify with and to be one with. We are in trouble when we can not own our own feelings and insights, when we disclaim that which is closest to us. We are in trouble when our society and those closest to us will not accept us if we unapologetically own our own feelings, insights, and opinions. Then we can not be ourselves with integrity and we can not give/share that which is most truly ours. Then bonds of community are broken and our community can not be united with integrity; so community disintegrates in misunderstanding---because members can not meaningfully stand for themselves and understand each other as they really are. When we can not stand for what we really are, we can not understand and enjoy each other in giving/sharing which is meaningful. A community has unity because its members share their differing gifts in common. If a collection of people are not free to share their experiences, perceptions, insights, and opinions in open and honest communications---they are not a community, because they do not give/share their common gifts. Those who can not stand together with mutual understanding and respect; tend to fall apart, both individually and corporately. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
