It may be important to the welfare of people who are unfamiliar with it, yet they may not readily recognize that it is missing from their lives, community, relationships, etc. Even though they may have known it to some extent, in the past, it is difficult to be aware of that which is notable by its absence. Recognition of an absence of an essential component of life is made even more difficult if by its being unfamiliar it is feared. Even thought it may be essential to a healthy life, it may be feared due to lack of familiarity. Childhood circumstances may have engendered fears by association not fully understood. Adults may have learned to fear in their childhood that which is essential to life, and so repressed from expression that which they learned to fear. The child when grown to adulthood may then pass on that fear to the next generation, and so the child can be the determinant of the adult. Neither children nor adults are likely to recognize what that essential to life is missing from their community. They may not even recognize the nature of that which they fear, and much less recognize that the unknown that they fear is essential to the integrity of their community, and to them as members of the community. The dynamics of perverted community interactions can generate a collusion which makes taboo that which is essential to individual and communal integrity. The participants in the collusion out of fear regard some unknown essential component of integrated communal living as taboo, and covertly threaten to punish any member of their community who recognizes it as essential to the integration of their community into a genuine unity so that it would be with-unity, a genuine community. Such situations are probably much more common than we recognize. How are we to safely recognize them and deal with them wisely? We can not integrate our fragmented collections of people into genuine communities with unity and integrity---unless we learn how to escape from our games of mutual self deception, our collusions and the taboos which they enforce. Since the essence of collusion is deception---we can escape only through transcendent dedications to the promotion of safe contexts for openness and honesty. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
