Such a discussion of roles presumes equality and mutuality and is inappropriate to a relationship in which the power to control the relationship is vested in the objective observer. To surrender that power to control the relationship would be regarded as a failure of commitment to objectivity, and would be severely criticized by other observers who have a personal stake in retaining their power to manipulate and control objects that behave in predictable ways. These considerations are central to any understanding of the process of science education, and the respective roles played by students and teachers who are committed to avoiding bias through faithfully playing the roles which characterized objective relationships. Self-referential analysis which is without bias is taboo to people who are committed to playing the roles which characterize objective relationships. In one form of self-referential analysis a person is cast in the role of observer, and the same person is cast in the role of object of that observer's observations. Such casting, and any script calling for such casting, is absurd and internally inconsistent to anyone committed to playing only objective relationship roles. To try to play such a pair of roles simultaneously---is to discover the injustices and structural biases which are inherent in people treating each other objectively. People who regard objectivity as the supreme ideal---can not bear to make that discovery, or to surrender the biases which endow observer/analysts with more power than is granted to people cast in the role of objects. In a less obvious form of self-referential analysis, a person tries to objectively understand, predict and control a loved one who is near and dear. Such efforts undermine the integrity of the non-objective relationship, and call into question the ultimate importance which some people place upon objective relationships. People who are ultimately committed to objective relationships can not bear to engage in honest self-referential analysis; and to avoid occasions of it will avoid intimacy and relationships characterized by love and personal integrity.
