An object does not relate the observer in the way that the observer relates to an object. The roles of object and observer are different. There is a lack of symmetry. The nature and behavior of an object is understood, predicted and controlled by an observer, not vice versa. To be an object is to be manipulated. An observer is not subject to the analysis, manipulation, understanding, predictions and control of the object. The dominant behavior is the role of the subject, the submissive behavior is the role of the object. Semantic confusion results from the fact that the object is subjected to objective behavior by the person who observes the object. However, when one person treats another person as object---the object is called the subject---when the one person is subjected to objective behavior on the part of the other person. The words traditionally used to designate roles tend to confuse the nature of the roles, by reversing the names assigned to roles when the object is a person; rather than an object which does not object to being subjected to playing the passive role of being analyzed, manipulated, understood, predicted and controlled. When one person behaves objectively towards another person and the person who is subjected to such objective behavior accepts the passive role of subject of that objective behavior, the subject becomes as an object that does not participate equally with the observer. The roles of the two persons are different. There is a lack of symmetry, mutuality, balance, and equality of power. That lack biases the relationship---so as to favor the person playing the role of observer. Objective relationships among people are biased relationships. Objectivity is not a means to unbiased understanding among peoples. People who approach each other objectively can not develop unbiased consensuses---because in objective relationships some people play dominant roles and other people play submissive roles. Power is not shared equally and so power corrupts the process of understanding, predicting and control. Any "consensus" which forms is biased in favor of the most powerful person's set of perceptions, desires, emotions, fears, etc. These considerations are central to any understanding of the process of science education and the respective unbalanced roles played by teachers and students.
