%UNBIASED ANALYSIS OF SCIENTISTS 840902
There has been much said about "science", but far
less has been said about scientists. Scientists
are compulsively preoccupied with avoiding bias by the
method of treating everything in an objective way, as
objects. Scientists can not be understood meaningfully by
treating scientists as objects, so in the absence of
successful understanding via the objective mode,
scientists do not try to understand scientists
objectively. Since it is taboo for scientists to try
to understand anything in any way other than
objectively, they do not try to understand scientists
at all. Scientists are a taboo subject for scientists
to try to understand, so they depersonalize scientists'
activities, and hide them behind the abstract mask of
"science" and talk only about the abstraction
"science".
"Science" can not be held accountable for unjust
actions taken, unwise priorities set, negligence in
situations which called for humane action, etc. So long
as the actions of scientists are not reflected upon, so
long can "science" avoid being held accountable.
The practice of masking scientists' activities with
the abstraction "science"---is inconstant with the ideals
of scientists; it hides facts, opinions, relationships,
and biases from public view---so that the truth about
scientists can not be openly and honestly discussed. The
scientists consensus which is formed behind the mask of
"science"---is a biased consensus---even if it is
arrived at in an "objective way." The consensus is
unreliable and at some time its falsehood will catch up
with scientists; perhaps in the form of a nuclear war.
It is time to put the spotlight upon scientists
as persons: their ideals, how their ideals developed,
how the new generation is indoctrinated in their
ideals, how they choose leaders and by what criteria,
how they set priorities, and how they relate their
ideals to setting: their priorities, the nature of
their social and political lives, etc. It is time to
take the mask of "science" off of scientists, and find
who is really behind the mask and just what the mask has
been hiding.
