For each human situation there are leaders and ideals which are appropriate to the situation; and other leaders who are inappropriate to the situation. When inappropriate leaders and ideals are chosen, or dominate, then human creative potentials are inhibited. Then people and leaders are guided by disintegrative ideals. Cooperation is impossible without open and honest communication. Thus, the inhibition of open and honest communication inhibits creative cooperation. Any ideals and leaders which lead to the inhibition of open and honest communication---inhibit creative cooperation. Ideals and leaders need to be assessed with this insight in mind. Not all ideals promote personal and communal integrity. Cooperation is inhibited if members of a community can not trust each other for lack of integrity. If members of a "community" are on the defensive and lack security---they are diverted away from creative cooperation. Insecure people waste their time, energy and money on tragic attempts to achieve security through clever manipulative and/or coercive techniques. They are not free to spend their time, energy and money in cooperative ventures which create new levels of community, through the integration of their diverse potentials into a community which has integrity because all its members are supported in their diverse efforts to develop their own personal integrity. Different situations call for different ideals--- and leaders embodying different ideals. Just because a certain ideal and leader is worthy of respect in one particular situation---is not reason for granting that ideal and leader great respect in a significantly different situation. Some situations call for objective and technical skills. Other situations call for personal ideals and skills. When what is called for in one situation dominates in the other situations tragic consequences ensue; e.g., the crisis in science education created by the ideals and leaders of pure research dominating the nature of education programs---which should be person-centered, rather than object-centered. It will be inappropriate to permit scientists' objective research ideals to dominate the assessment of those ideals. That would not be bias-free assessment. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
