If those who enforce rules are not clearly dedicated to the promotion of personal and communal integrity, then those who are not permitted to enjoy the forbidden sweet fruit---are likely to rebel in the name of justice. Such rebellion is especially likely if the procedures used to enforce the rules obviously undermine personal and communal integrity in tragic ways. It is hard for thinking people to respect rules which cannot be enforced without undermining personal and communal integrity. Some people proclaim that the rules which they seek to enforce are the embodiment of God's will for His creatures. Such people claim to have the knowledge of good and evil which was given to them directly by God. Their confession is that they have eaten of the forbidden tree in the midst of the Garden of Eden, and that through the knowledge they gained thereby --- they have become God's messengers regarding the nature of good and evil as known by God. In their eating of that forbidden fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they have forgotten that God Herself forbade them to eat of that tree, and forbade them to know which people's misdeeds are adequate grounds for damnation, alienation, estrangement, etc. Taboos are rules which are usually unwritten, and are enforced by undermining the personal and communal integrity of individuals who violate the rules. When taboos operate to forbid the enjoyment of personal and communal integrity, the victims of such taboos naturally rebel, because they yearn for personal and communal integrity. They can not with integrity respect the people who seek to enforce taboos which say that only a privileged few who have earned the right--- may enjoy personal and communal integrity. It is hard for thinking people to respect rules which can not be enforce without undermining the personal and communal integrity of the world. Such thinking people come to respect God's first rule which says that the knowledge of good and evil is the ultimately forbidden fruit, for the sake of integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
