The flip side of that coin is that such people are not free under the terms of their ideals to freely give and receive love and affection---because in terms of their ideals, such gifts should be exchanged only when proper conditions have been met. Their ideals often perpetuate the conditions which lead them to choose those ideals. From their point of view there is nothing logically wrong with their ideals. Yet they remain alienated, lonely, unable to creatively cooperate with others who have chosen ideals which unite them into cooperative communities distinguished by personal and communal integrity. Too often people choose ideals with the purpose of distinguishing themselves as being personally special, better, more worthy of respect, love and affection. Their choices of ideals lead them to become alienated. Their lives are defined in terms of competition---rather than in terms of cooperation. They compete for recognition as being the very best at fulfilling their ideals. By their own alienative logic they must tragically compete with others who share their own ideals; yet even success does not serve as the basis for enjoying the love, respect and affection for which they hunger. Such fruits are not enjoyed by people who strive to set themselves apart as better than others. Moral, religious, political, economic, academic, and all other kinds of ideals mislead people whenever the ideals are perceived as the basis for setting some people apart as better than others; so more worthy of love, affection and respect. When so regarded, such ideals undermine the personal and communal integrity of the communities in which they mislead human aspirations, behaviors, and fears. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
