Even in this infamous year of 1984 we as nations,
religious groups, political parties, economic groups,
etc. can not control the desires and thoughts of
individual members. This is true regardless of how
many people are fundamentalists, liberals, rightists,
leftists, democrats, dictators, communists, socialists,
capitalists, etc. and pride themselves in being like they
are. It is even true of people who pride themselves on how
well they control their own thoughts and desires!
We can not control our thoughts and desires so long
as our society and friends do not give us positive
encouragement to own our thoughts and desires, to claim
them as legitimately our own. We can not control that
which we do not legitimately own. We have no right to
control that which is not legitimately ours and socially
recognized as legitimately ours. This is true of
personal property; it is also true of personal thoughts
and desires. The former truth is generally accepted.
The latter truth is generally ignored, with tragic
consequences.
That which we do not legitimately own tends to act on
its own. Our thoughts and desires which we do
not legitimately own---tend to be expressed in ways over
which we have no control. That which is repressed
within us pops up in uncontrolled ways which are not
always recognized as expressions of that which was
repressed. Repressed people find ways to express their
anger, frustration and dis-respect for dictators who
repress them. Repressed thoughts and desires are
similar.
When we are positively encouraged to legitimately own
our own thoughts and desires---we are free to share them
and consider the possible consequences of the large
variety of ways in which we might give expression in
action to our thoughts and desires. Others may help
us to recognized the undesirable consequences of
thoughtlessly giving overt expression in actions to
thoughts and desires which would undermine personal
and/or communal integrity. Only when a community takes
positive steps to encourage its members to legitimately
own their personal thoughts and desires, can the members
of the community help each other to express their
thoughts and desires in honest integrative ways.
