They are prone to delight in solving impersonal problems through the use of sophisticated impersonal techniques, and are frustrated by the lack of personal meaning in their technical accomplishments. Their frustration leads them to try to do more and better of that which they know best how to do; to solve impersonal problems through the use of sophisticated impersonal techniques. Their value system blinds them to the fact that their personal frustration originates in their exclusion of personal aspects from their lives; e.g., emotions, affection, intimacy, direct sensual experiences, personal dialogue, etc. Their technical exclusivity robs their technical accomplishments of personal meaning, by excluding that which is personal from their lives---including personal meaning. They therefore search for the fulfillment of their emptiness in increases in sophistication, size, and resource consumption of technical efforts. Such accomplishments at least can be measured and objectively reported in their technical literature. Personal reports of the personal meaning, if any, enjoyed in problem solving is not welcome in their technical literature. Only objective, quantitative reporting is welcome, for only it can be verified by independent experimentation. Most personal meaning is experienced in non- problematic situations, in situations which are not problem-solving situations. Technocrats tend to be at a loss in non-problematic situations, for they know how to cope only in problematic situations. For this reason technocrats often behave in ways which turn non- problematic situations which are full of personal meaning---into problematic situations which are devoid of personal meaning, but with which they know how to cope. They then seek to achieve personal meaning in the newly created problematic situations, and are unable to understand in technical terms why they seem unable to achieve the sought for personal meaning. Technocrats need help in carefully examining their most elementary assumptions about what is real and worthy of human attention, and what are appropriate attitudes to bring to human meetings with that which is chosen as being most real. The level of satisfaction depends upon attitudes brought to such I-It and I-Thou meetings. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
