Not all truths are objective, and not all objective truths are objectively true independent of the politics of truth. People decide what is true in part because of the nature of the interpersonal relationships and the needs of the people involved in the politics of deciding what is true. The truth-needs of people may change, and so what is true may change in order to meet those truth-needs. Truths are not all eternal, they are often relative to the needs of the people who decide what is true. Intellectual communities often form around clusters of truths, and around the politics of deciding what truths to add to such clusters of truth. Often such communities exist to meet the needs of the members for community, more true to say that the purpose is than to discover/decide upon new truths. Humans can not be human apart from community, even if they are intellectuals. To be fully human is to be part of a community. Thus intellectuals form intellectual communities to meet their needs for community. They say to themselves and to others that the purpose of their communities is to discover truths, but perhaps it is more to meet the needs of the members for community, and for the fulfillment which comes from participating in the politics of deciding what is true.
