What Jack believes himself to be, plays a major role in motivating his desires, decisions and actions. If Jack thinks that he is stupid, he will not desire to do things which require intelligence, he will not decide to go to college, and will not make application to college. If Jack thinks that he is ugly, he will not be prone to court a beautiful woman because he will fear to desire her and decide to try to get acquainted. If Jack believes that he is not a free agent with the power to make decisions and take actions in keeping with desires that are uniquely his, then Jack will probably take few initiatives. The kind of reality which Jack believes himself to be, plays a major role in determining the kinds of relationships into which Jack enters. Jack's motivation flows in large part from his self-conception, his self-image. Jack's self-image depends profoundly upon what Jill thinks of Jack. If Jack thinks a great deal of Jill, and Jill thinks that Jack is stupid---but a nice guy---then Jack will probably tend to be a nice guy who is stupid. If Jill thinks that Jack is capable of great accomplishments, and Jack thinks of Jill a great deal; then Jack will probably be motivated to fulfill his potentials more completely---than if Jill tended to play down Jack's abilities. Jack's self image depends greatly upon the image which Jack's primary others have of Jack. This is of great importance in relationships between teachers and students. Jill's teachers think of her as a very pretty girl who will grow up to be a beautiful and sexually attractive female. They think of the lucky guy who will get her to be his wife and house-keeper. Their image of her is that of the beautiful woman playing the traditional roles of a female. Jill's motivation to fulfill her intellectual potentials will depend greatly upon how fully she accepts as her own self-image, the image which her primary others offer to her. Her decisions and actions will be motivated by desires which are in keeping with whatever self-image she adopts as her own. What Jill may become is not an objective reality open to objective verification, just as her and other people's images of her are not objective realities; they are personally chosen images.
