Of what value is a way of knowing which destroys the knower? What shall it profit a man to gain all kinds of knowledge, but in the process cease to be a subject with subjective insights, intuitions, understanding, desires, etc? It is logically consistent to believe that a man must sacrifice selfhood in order to know important truths? The person who believes only in objective truths tends to fall into the trap of such believing. It is logically inconsistent to believe that a person can know self objectively. If objective knowledge is the only legitimate form of knowledge, then there is no legitimate way to know self, and self must not be real. Knowledge of other people as persons is highly reflexive, revealing of self as personal. We can not come to know other persons in a personal way without at the same time coming to know our selves in a personal way. Intimate relationships are mutually self revealing in a mirroring which generates an infinity of transformed images of each other. For this reason it is impossible to be fully objective about coming to know other persons in an intimate way. Because objectivity excludes profound self-knowledge, it excludes profound knowledge of other persons. We can not be objective about the friendships, families, and social structures which "create" us, thus there can not be an objective science in terms of which to understand our selves. Science pertains to knowledge. Any process of coming to know our selves must involve changing our selves. If the science does not describe the changed selves, then it is not accurate. A self consistent science will describe the people who have been changed by the existence of the the self consistent science. A self consistent science will be reflexive, among other things; it will describe the scientists. For this reason a self consistent science will transcend objective science. Exclusively objective sciences can not be self consistent sciences, because they destroy the selves which they try to describe through analysis and objectification. The development of subjective sciences will require the transcendence of the exclusivities of objective scientists. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
