Contexts are created within which there is a maximum possibility to finding continuous fulfillment and satisfaction in taking their ultimate beliefs seriously. There is a tendency to avoid contexts within which there is a real possibility of embarrassment relating to ultimate beliefs. When such threatening contexts can not be avoided, there is a tendency to permit the ultimate beliefs to direct perception so as to avoid embarrassment of the beliefs. The important realities are those which support the ultimate beliefs. Those experiences which do not fit significantly into a supportive pattern are regarded as unimportant or illusory. Scientists create laboratories in which conditions are so controlled as to as offer confirmations of scientists' beliefs that nature is predictable. They conduct experiments in which accurate measurements and computations yield satisfying predictions. Objective scientists avoid complex situations which can not be understood in formal ways, and do not yield to quantitative analysis. Objective scientists do not clearly perceive those aspects of everyday life which can not be understood scientifically; and regard as important their formal laboratory work. Processes which can not be understood, predicted, and controlled are likely to be regarded as unimportant and/or illusory. Religious zealots create communities in which non- objective realities play central roles. Their realities are created by communal consensus and sustained by consensus. Through their rituals they affirm the importance of their beliefs and the implications of their beliefs upon human behavior. Through prediction they direct behavior to fulfill the prediction, saying that that is how things are; they can not be otherwise. Those who do not share in the belief structure are excommunicated overtly or covertly. Some scientists are religious zealots who will not tolerate any challenge to their belief structure, nor disrespect for their rituals.
