Tragedies are occasioned by the affirmation of positive values, not by the neglect of all values. Tragedies are occasioned by the affirmation of secondary (even though positive) values to the neglect of greater values; a matter of confused priorities. The Englishman who sat sipping his 4 p.m. tea (because of the great importance of relaxation and tradition) while his house, wife, and children burned--- occasioned a tragedy because of his inordinate affirmation of the tradition of tea at 4 p.m. He neglected values which transcend the value of having tea at 4 p.m. We may learn much about people by taking note of which transcendent values they neglect to affirm. It is often distracting to note only those values which people affirm; rarely do people affirm negative values for negative reasons---usually people affirm positive values for positive reasons. The tragedy is that through specialization and lack of balance people too often neglect to put secondary values in the light of transcendent values---by neglecting to give proper consideration to transcendent values. People often behave as there were no basis upon which to regard some values as of more important, more ultimate, than other values. If all values are regarded as of equal importance, then it is a matter of individual taste which we emphasize. Experience indicates otherwise. How joyful, successful, meaningful, coherent, memorable, pleasurable, valued, respected, imitated, etc. a person's life is---depends greatly upon which pattern of values the person has as the ground of being and doing, and depends upon which values the person neglects. Neglected values may not be evident because of collusions which contend that the neglected values are of such little consequence as to be inappropriate for considerations. It may be taboo to mention transcendent values because they will call into judgment idolatrous secondary values. The whole structure of an idolatrous sub-culture/profession may be founded upon idolatrous secondary values which occasion protectionist collusions which it is taboo to point to. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
